Working On A Valentine Heart Afghan -

The Heart Applique

I looked and looked for just the right crochet heart and could not find a
pattern I was happy with for this project.  I decided to make my own pattern.
So I'm going to give it a whirl here and try to explain to you how to make it.

Pink yarn #4 weight worsted yarn.  Use two threads at a time.
I used both side ends of one skein.  The side thread and the thread that comes out of the end.
My crochet needle is size L

MR- Magic Ring
SS - Slip Stitch
SC - Single Crochet
Ch - Chain
SLST - Slip Stitch

Start with a Magic Ring.
Single crochet 10 around the MR
SS closed in the beginning ( top two threads)
Chain 3
SC at the bottom of the Ch 3
at the two open threads.
(Ch 1 then Sc under the 4 thread hole.)
Do this three more times but in the
3rd one chain not 1 time but 2 chs
Sc again in same place.
This is making the point at the bottom of the heart.
To clarify again what should be in
the point.  1sc ch 2 1sc.
Then chain one and sc in the next stitch.
Again (Chain and sc into the next stitch.)
 2 more times.
Ch 1 sc into the next stitch but
chain 3.
Close the round by SLST at the very
bottom of the first chain three where there are
4 threads to go under.
Pull it tight but not too tight.

Below the threads have all been pulled tight.

The below pictures show the holes under the stitches.

Below this is towards the top where you sc through the two loops of the stitch.

Slip Stitch the two loops

Below Front

Below Back

Below you can see the holes under the stitches.

Above Pictures

Bring your needle with the loops
to the center of the heart go into the center
of the heart and pull through your double threads.
*Sl St the Two loops together then bring the lead threads
over the top of the heart from the back. Then slip stitch
the lead threads with the loops
on your needle.  Tighten the center hole by pulling the two cut threads in the back.
Tighten the lead threads firmly this makes the v at the top of your heart
more visible.

Chain 1 then Sc into the loop right beside your chain 1.  Chain 1 again, now Sc in the hole below the stitches - keep your threads loose but not too loose.  Chain 1 then Sc under the next stitch.  Continue this way until you get to the point. Go ahead and Sc into the point then chain 2 then Sc again in the same place.  Ch1 then continue SC to the holes under the stitches chaining 1 between each stitch.
When you reach the bottom of chain 3  go through the top two threads of the stitch for your SC. Ch 1 the sc again through the two threads at the top of the next stitch.   Ch 1 then take your needle through the center of your heart again pulling to the front the two lead threads.  Slip stitch the two loops.  Then take the lead threads over the top from the back and Slip Stich with the loops on your hook.

**Chain 1 Sc into the second stitch of the right top of your heart, Chain 1 then Sc under next chain loops in the hole. Continue until you get to the point at the bottom of the heart, SC, Chain 2, SC Chain 1.  Then SC in the holes under the stitches all the way up as you start working into the V only use the two threads at the top of the stitch. (Photo below)  Then again take your hook into the center pulling through the lead thread SS them together. Follow the same instruction at *

Do your SC through these two loops at the top  (On Ending This Round)
Chain 1 then go through the center.

Continue following the pattern ** until you reach the desired size.  When you are on your last row.  Chain three instead of two in the point at the bottom of the heart, everything else is the same.  End your project at the point in the v.  Weave in all your strings unless you want to use some of them as a way to tie them onto something.

I'm going to sew these hearts onto my afghan blanket which is not complete.  I still have a couple hearts to make.

When I Complete The Afghan I will tell you how
to make the Afghan.

I'm putting a fringe on the ends

Put buttons on your hearts before you
attach them to your afghan.

Buttons are 40mm = Just a bit over an inch and a half - 1.57 inch
They come in multi-colored bags with 25 buttons.
I needed two bags to find the number of bright pink buttons I needed.
